Peter with Mark Merry at Mark's farwell function in March2009
A congregation of approximately one thousand people celebrated the life of Peter Schlitz in a moving Requiem Mass at Marcellin College yesterday. It was a fitting occasion for a man who dedicated almost his entire professional life as an educator at Marcellin College. Peter’s friend Fr John Carnie lead the mass which was held in St Marcellin’s Hall to accommodate the large crowd. Old Collegians were prominent in the congregation especially by Peter’s friends from the Football Club. It was a mark of great respect to Peter the entire Marist Brothers Province was present, lead by Provincial Br Julian Casey. Former Principals Mark Merry, Paul Herrick, Br John McMahon and Br Stephen Bugg were also present, as were many former colleagues including those from the Camberwell Campus.
Fr John reminded the congregation of Peter’s dedication to his faith, his family and of course to Marcellin. Family and friends shared wonderful anecdotes about Peter, with his love of Footy, student discipline and duck hunting season being dominating themes.
Chris Roberts and Carmel Schlitz provided the readings and Peter’s children, Cassie, Allision, Tammy, Jacqui and David read the Prayers of the Faithful. The Marcellin Champagnat Choir sang beautifully included a Johnny Cash piece!
After the service, the congregation and student leaders provided a guard of honor as Peter left the Marcellin grounds for the last time. It was standing room only at the Marcellin functions room and the Manningham hotel as everyone shared their memories of Peter.
