Marcellin College in Camberwell and Bulleen has produced a wonderfully diverse alumni since its beginnings in 1950. Here we feature just some of our alumni and teachers.
Old Collegians Stories
JOHN Taylor, a teacher and a natural leader who took on myriad challenges – from route-finding through a whiteout in deadly crevasses on a glacier to flying to remote areas across Australia, fighting fires and building a mud brick house – has died in Alexandra of a short battle with cancer. He was 52.
Sadly, we have lost another Old Collegian from the Marcellin Family. John Briffa (OC 1965) passed away suddenly in his sleep last Friday.
Michael Erwin has the rare distinction of captaining Marcellin's First XI Cricket side and First XVIII Football side to AGS Premierships in the one year. Listen to Michael tell his story, and his fondness of his experiences at Marcellin.
Michael Dixon is another of those first day 1950 boys at Marcellin, starting in Grade 5 and eventually pushing right through to Matriculation.
1960 was probably a unique year in the history of Marcellin. Of the 45 graduating Year 12 students, five went on to become medical specialists
Brian Millane started at Canterbury Rd in 1953 and endured ten years there until he completed Matriculation in 1962. The word ‘endured’ is deliberately chosen, because Brian is remembered by many of his colleagues as being on the wrong end of the stick – literally – through much of that time.
The Class of 74 held their reunion at the Manningham Hotel last Friday. The night was a great success.
Ken Boland, much loved knock-about priest to the large congregation at St Francis church in Elizabeth St in central Melbourne, was a first day student when Marcellin opened it's doors in 1950.
Congratulations to Old Collegian Steve Dinneen for his fantastic win in the recent Melbourne half marathon. Steve ran the event in just 66 minutes. But the day was not over for Steve.
Old Collegian Major General Fergus 'Gus' McLachlan was the guest of honour at this year's ANZAC Day commemoration ceremony at Marcellin. This was Gus' first official visit to the school since he graduated in 1981. G
