RIP John Briffa

Sadly, we have lost another Old Collegian from the  Marcellin Family. John Briffa (OC 1965) passed away suddenly in his sleep last Friday.

John was a student, both at Canterbury Road, Camberwell and Bulleen from 1957 to 1966.  He was captain of the senior Tennis Team in his last year and made a major contribution to the establishment of the Old Collegians Tennis Club.  John's younger brother, Peter, also attended Marcellin College from 1966 -1973.

Tragedy struck John early in his life with the sudden death of his first wife, Maureen (Boyd), leaving him to raise his young son, David.  His Marcellin spirit gave him strength of character and determination to get through this very sad time.  He later met Sue and together they had two more sons, Daniel and Andrew.  All three boys attended Marcellin - David 1981-1986, Daniel 1997-2002 and Andrew 1998 - 2003.

John was also a major contributor to the Old Collegians Football Club in its formative years, helping rally the numbers to field teams and coach the Club XVIII in 1978 and 1979.  He was a very well known and loved member of the Club and was integral in organising many memorable social functions, and was particularly welcoming to new players and supporters.

John was also instrumental in the planning and organising of the College's Golden Jubilee in 2000.

A larger than life personality, John loved a laugh and sharing a joke.  He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the  Marcellin Community.  We extend our sympathy and prayers to Sue, David, Daniel, Andrew and the extended Briffa family.

The Requiem Mass for John will be offered at St Bede's Catholic Church, 1 Severn Street, Balwyn North on Tuesday 20 June at 11am followed by a private cremation.
